Monsanto is found guilty in Roundup trial

A quarter-billion of it is purely punitive damages, meant to punish the company for "acting with malice and oppression".

Monsanto Co. says it will appeal the verdict.

"The jury sent a message to the Monsanto boardroom that they have to change the way they do business", said Robert F. Kennedy Jr - an environmental lawyer, son of the late United States senator and a member of Johnson's legal team.

Four years later Johnson - now near death, according to his doctors - has been awarded a staggering sum of $289 million dollars in damages in a case against agricultural giant Monsanto.

Roundup is widely available in British garden centres and is thought to be the most commonly used weedkiller in the world.

"We are sympathetic to Mr Johnson and his family", Monsanto said in a statement, but promised to "continue to vigorously defend this product".

Environmentalists say the weedkiller is linked to cancer, although the claim is strongly denied by manufacturers and the European Union has approved the chemical for use. The lawsuit brought by Johnson was the first to go to trial among hundreds filed in state and federal courts saying Roundup causes non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, which Monsanto denies.

"I figured if it could kill weeds it could kill me", said Johnson. He worked at the time as a groundskeeper for the school district in Benicia, a suburb north of San Francisco. During that time, he mixed and sprayed hundreds of gallons of the chemical. Monsanto claims the chemical is effective over 300 variants of weeds across over 125 countries. It's not just Monsanto that markets glyphosate-based weed-killers, there are 30-35 glyphosate-based herbicides sold in India under different brand names by domestic and foreign companies.

Judge Orders Plane Carrying Deported Mother And Child Turned Around
Upon hearing the news, Sullivan ordered their flight returned and suggested that Sessions could be held in contempt of court , according to the ACLU.

Dortch was not directly involved in the case decided Friday, but his law firm represents more than a 100 client making related claims.

Monsanto has denied that glyphosate, the key ingredient in both Roundup and Ranger Pro, causes cancer.

There is conflicted evidence linking glyphosate and cancer.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in September 2017 concluded a decades-long assessment of glyphosate risks and found the chemical not likely carcinogenic to humans. Emails sent the duo seeking comment on the California court's verdict and government plan of action remained unanswered at the time of publishing this article. As per the Indian food regulator FSSAI, the maximum permissible residue levels of glyphosate as of December previous year are: 1 mg/kg in tea, 0.01 mg/kg in rice and 0.05 mg/kg in meat. That was enough for the World Health Organization to label the idea that glyphosate caused cancer as "probable".

"Science is not besotted by court cases and the actual scientific evidence we have shows that that link is not apparent at the concentrations humans use, under the conditions human use it", Dr Musgrave said.

He added that the verdict sent a "message to Monsanto that its years of deception regarding Roundup is over and that they should put consumer safety first over profits".

On Friday, the jury sided with Johnson. He later made a call on his cellphone. "The Johnson v Monsanto verdict is a win for all of humanity and all life on earth", said Zen Honeycutt, Founding Executive Director of Moms Across America.
