Jobs numbers up, but rate hike not necessarily on way

It is up 0.1 per cent from July 2017.

The increase comes as the employment rate declined from 63.5 per cent in June to 63.1 per cent in July, as 11,800 fewer people were employed in the region, according the federal statistics agency's monthly Labour Force Survey.

Nationally, the economy generated 54,100 net new jobs last month and saw its unemployment rate fall, but the headline improvements overshadowed weaker details: a rush of new part-time, public sector positions and a drop in full-time work.

Here at home, Prince Albert's unemployment rate took a steep climb, surging to its highest point in months and reaching 11.2 per cent.

Overall, Canada gained approximately 54,000 jobs since last month, driving the national unemployment rate down from 6.0 per cent to 5.8 per cent.

Ontario saw an increase of 61,000 jobs, all of them part-time, dropping the provincial unemployment rate by half a percentage to 5.4 per cent.

In total there were 34,700 who were unemployed in July, up from 34,400 in June.

N'Golo Kante, Jorginho impress in new-look midfield as Chelsea cruise
When a team plays well but loses, it is sometimes hard to figure out if they have been wasteful or unlucky. Jorginho converted the penalty, a skip on his run-up leaving Hamer on his backside.

The healthy rise though was driven entire by part-time employment, which jumped by 82,000 jobs, while 28,000 full-time positions were shed.

Average hourly wages in July, a figure watched closely by the central bank, rose by 3.0 percent from a year earlier.

Compared to a year ago, employment was essentially unchanged.

Calgary's rate increased slightly from 7.7 per cent to 7.9 per cent.

"Employment rose in a number of services-producing industries: educational services; health care and social assistance; information, culture and recreation; and the other services industry", Stats Canada reported.

For Shenfeld, the report contained a "good" set of numbers that will keep markets guessing whether the BoC will introduce its next interest rate hike in September or October.

"In contrast, employment fell in most goods-producing industries, specifically manufacturing, construction and natural resources". Those gains were mostly due to growth in full-time work.
