The clash took place just before midday on Tuesday amid Egyptian efforts to broker a cease-fire between Israel and the Palestinian militant Hamas group, which controls the coastal strip.

"In response to terrorists shooting at IDF forces in the northern Gaza Strip, an IDF tank attacked the position belonging to the Hamas terror group where the attack originated", the army said.

Al-Qassam said that the training including the use of sniper fire, and explosives, and the fighters were practicing techniques when the Israeli army fired a shell at them, killing the two fighters.

The deaths of two of its fighters could trigger an escalation between Hamas and Israel.

Ran Goldstein, the head of the Israel-based Physicians for Human Rights, told the state-run Israeli Broadcasting Corporation that Hamas had told him that "the video sent by the family of Avraham Mengistu to their son about two years ago has been passed on".
