Facebook to Start Monetizing WhatsApp Amid Sluggish Earnings Growth

Since a year ago, WhatsApp has been testing WhatsApp Business, which lets companies message customers with things like boarding passes, shipping information, and responses to customer service inquiries.

After reporting sluggish earnings growth last week, Facebook has chose to monetize WhatsApp by display ads of businesses that link out to the messaging service, The Verge is reporting.

"We're introducing a solution for businesses that require more powerful tools to chat on WhatsApp and a new way for people to quickly start a WhatsApp conversation from an ad on Facebook", the leading social network said in an online post.

Like other messages sent via the platform, they will be encrypted, meaning WhatsApp will not be able to read them itself.

Companies will be able to respond free to questions or comments sent to them on WhatsApp, as long as the responses are fired off within 24 hours. WhatsApp will also reportedly be launching ads in its Status feature, a tool similar to Instagram stories.

In the Powell, Ohio, police report regarding that incident, Courtney Smith said she had been a victim of habitual domestic abuse. I don't know if everyone just shut their mouth so as to not upset the apple cart that is Ohio State football.

Facebook paid $19bn to buy WhatsApp in 2014 and there has always been speculation about how Facebook meant to make money from it. WhatsApp will charge for messages sent by the business outside of the 24-hour window.

The new features are available for both Android and iOS users but they must first download the latest version via the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

Some of the key enterprises enabled by Gupshup to gain early access to WhatsApp Business include Citibank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, IndusInd Bank, ICICI Bank, and DishTV, the statement said.

Facebook shares plummeted last week on disappointing results.
