Dota 2 : 'Artificial intelligence' makes a record by defeating human players

Since OpenAI's Dota 2 bot beat professional player Danylo "Dendi" Ishutin at the global 2017, the AI has evolved significantly.

Its creators specifically chose Dota 2, as the game combines high-level strategy and fast decision making with a large pool of heroes, all of them with different skill sets. OpenAI co-founder and CTO Greg Brockman has previously described it as - if you assume that it takes a human at least 12,000 hours to become a professional at the game, OpenAI's systems essentially play 100 human lifetimes of experience every day to train. The nonprofit research lab employed a scaled-up version of Proximal Policy Optimization running on 256 GPUs and 128,000 cores, a similar setup used in last year's bot which dominated in 1-vs-1 Dota 2 matches. At a recent battle between the human players and the bot, the team of human players managed to win just one game from the artificially intelligent bot, Cnet reported. It was, however, given five invulnerable couriers-though it was not allowed to scout nor tank creep waves with them. "You have imperfect information, you have team work, you have these exponential combinations of different heroes and items, and you have to be able to deal with all of that".

When later considering drafting, we realized we could use this to evaluate the win probability of any draft: just look at the prediction on the first frame of a game with that lineup.

Following the victory, Musk tweeted congratulating the OpenAI team.

Saudi Arabia Freezes New Trade Deals with Canada, Recalls Envoy
Saudi women still need permission from male guardians to travel overseas or marry. Freeland tweeted about the arrests on Thursday. Badawi's wife and children now live in Canada.

In the first match, the AI steamrolled the humans in just 21 minutes.

It was a best-out-of-three event, so the AI had already won when round three came along.

This OpenAI video is meant to provide some insight into the model's planning via an output which predicts where a hero will be in the future. "This reaction time is much closer to human level, though we haven't seen evidence of changes in gameplay as OpenAI Five's strength comes more from teamwork and coordination than reflexes". In terms of compute time the Auguest 5th model uses 190 petaflop/s-days, which is a lot of number crunching.
