Chaffetz: Pelosi Is 'Number One Albatross' for Democrats Heading Into Midterms

In the midst of a contentious midterm election season, President Trump took aim at Nancy Pelosi on Friday, pleading with Democrats not to "distance" themselves from the House minority leader. Forty-nine percent said the caucus should pick a new leader.

Meanwhile, 79% of independents said that Pelosi should be replaced, while 91% of Republicans said they should pick a new leader.

While Republicans overwhelmingly support Pelosi's ouster, pollsters say there's more to the midterms than campaigning against Pelosi.

In an interview on CNN's "New Day" on Thursday, Michigan congressional candidate Rashida Tlaib said she would be unlikely to vote for Nancy Pelosi for speaker if Democrats retake the House.

Pelosi has downplayed the issue, saying that she expects to be the next Speaker of the House should Democrats win the majority this fall.

Reached for comment, Drew Hammill, Pelosi's spokesman, argued that the poll was "designed to generate a negative result for Leader Pelosi".

It's particularly significant because Democrats often struggle to turn out their voters when a presidential candidate isn't on the ballot.

Republicans are actively seeking to tie Democratic candidates to Pelosi, who has been a polarizing figure for more than a decade.

The findings could give Democratic Party leaders hope that even a series of narrow losses in GOP territory bodes well for them in November.

Trump has repeatedly bashed Pelosi, calling her - along with fellow frequent target Rep. Maxine Waters - "the unhinged FACE of the Democrat Party" and repeatedly using her name to throw shade at Democratic challengers in key races.

"Running against Nancy Pelosi is like running against George W. Bush in 2010 which Democrats tried to do".
