At least 91 dead, hundreds injured after quake rocks Indonesia

The powerful quake triggered panic among tourists and residents, and was also felt on the neighboring island of Bali.

Mr Dutton, who is heading to Bali for another summit, said it was a "terrible day" for Indonesia.

Authorities say foreign and Indonesian tourists are being evacuated from popular vacation islands off the northwest of Lombok following Sunday's powerful natural disaster that killed at least 82 people.

The quake, initially reported to be of 7.0-magnitude before the U.S. Geological Service downgraded it to a 6.9, struck the island of Lombok-a popular spot with tourists-where last week's natural disaster also hit. Her live-Tweeting brought the natural disaster to the attention of many in the Western Hemisphere. This is absolutely critical because people have been sleeping in open fields for many days now.

Travelers at the global airports in Lombok and Bali were thrown into panic and there was minor damage to the buildings but operations were not disrupted, officials said. Agung Widodo, a resident of Bali's main town of Denpasar, said he felt two strong tremors.

Indonesia is located in the Ring of Fire, an area in the basin of the Pacific Ocean, which is vulnerable to frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. In December 2004, a massive magnitude 9.1 natural disaster off Sumatra triggered a tsunami that killed 230,000 people in a dozen countries.

Nugroho said more than 20,000 people had been displaced.

Al Jazeera's Step Vaessen, reporting from Bangsal in northern Lombok, said the military was helping to evacuate tourists but many were left stranded in Bangsal.

Rescuers still have not reached some devastated parts of the Indonesian tourist island of Lombok after a powerful quake flattened houses and toppled bridges.

The main tourist areas of Lombok in the south and west of the island appear to have been spared the worst of the damage.

A boy with a heavily bandaged leg wailed in pain, an elderly man wore a splint improvised from strips of cardboard on a broken arm, and some hurt by falling debris still had dried blood on their faces.

Sengiggi, a seaside tourist strip on Lombok, looked abandoned. Amid collapsed houses, some hotels appeared to have closed, restaurants were empty and beaches deserted.

Muhammad Faozal, the head of West Nusa Tenggara's tourism agency, said there were about 1,200 mostly foreign tourists on the Gilis.

"It was a pretty violent shaking and swaying of the building".

"It was quite impossible to stand up".

The quake was the second in a week to hit Lombok.

"This is it for me in Indonesia".

"Our assessment is that people in Lombok really need shelters at the moment, especially tarps and blankets". There had been a half-hour evacuation at the Lombok airport following the quake because the electricity went off. TV showed crying women consoling each other outside Lombok's airport.

An Indonesian official says at least three people have been killed after a strong quake struck the popular tourist island of Lombok.

"Later I stopped a vehicle and I asked a local please take me and my family to the airport and he said "okay no problem".
