Trump releases 'very nice' letter from Kim Jong Un

In it, Kim describes his landmark June 12 summit with Trump in Singapore as the "start of a meaningful journey" and expresses confidence that the "sincere efforts" of both sides "will surely come to fruition".

The talks had been expected in the demilitarised zone on Thursday.

According to President Trump, returning the remains of USA troops was agreed upon during the Singapore summit.

That number includes 7,702 who are missing in action, with an estimated 5,300 believed to have been lost in the North, according to the Hawaii-based DPAA, which oversees the effort.

Trump tweeted the signed letter, saying it was a "very nice note" and that "great progress was being made". "It is likely that military generals from the USA and North Korea will take part in the meeting".

South Korean officials later said the meeting would be rescheduled for July 15, but that was after US negotiators arrived Thursday at the militarized border between the two Koreas and were kept waiting, the Yonhap News Agency reported, citing diplomatic officials it didn't identify.

The North's state media normally lead their television bulletins and front pages with Kim's doings, but a seven-day absence from the headlines, including during Pompeo's visit, had prompted speculation on his whereabouts among Korea-watchers.

While the American officials clearly thought a meeting was scheduled, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had previously indicated that the details hadn't been settled before he left North Korea on Saturday. "If those requests were gangster-like, the world is a gangster, because there was a unanimous decision at the UN Security Council about what needs to be achieved", he told reporters. Representatives of the two countries had been poised to meet in Panmunjom, which is regarded as the truce village on the inter-Korean border.

"Just heard Foreign Minister of North Korea speak at U.N. If he echoes thoughts of Little Rocket Man, they won't be around much longer!"

Hours after Trump's tweet, State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said North Korea offered to meet a USA delegation on Sunday to discuss the repatriation of remains of US soldiers killed in the 1950-53 Korean War, a pledge Trump had said he secured from Kim during last month's summit. The meeting was about returning the remains of American soldiers from the Korean War.

"The road ahead will be hard and challenging and we know that critics will try to minimize the work that we've achieved", he said.

North Korea proposed to reschedule the meeting for Sunday.
