Transgender woman says CVS pharmacist refused to fill hormone therapy prescriptions

A CVS pharmacist in Arizona was sacked after he refused to fill the hormone prescription of a transgender woman.

"I left my doctor's office elated", she wrote. After filling the prescription at Walgreens without trouble, Hall said she called CVS' corporate phone line multiple times to complain, but that no one addressed her concerns.

"I was finally going to start seeing my body reflect my gender identity and the woman I've always known myself to be", said Hall, who declined through an ACLU spokesperson to be interviewed for this article.

Hilde Hall said a CVS pharmacist gave her no clear reason for refusing to fill her prescription.

Although Hall acknowledged that CVS had received a ideal score from the Human Rights Campaign for its policies related to LGBTQ equality ― a fact also touted in the company's statement ― she said "measures should be in place to ensure no other customer is humiliated like I was".

"I almost started crying in the middle of the store", she recalled. The state law does not mention hormone therapy prescriptions. She said she felt like the CVS pharmacist was "trying to out me as transgender in front of strangers".

When Hall got home she spoke with her doctor, who called the pharmacist, but they still refused to fill the prescription.

She says the pharmacist refused to fill the prescription with other customers within earshot and she left the location in tears with her seven-year-old child by her side.

Hall has filed a complaint with the Arizona State Board of Pharmacy.

CVS Health extends its honest apologies to Ms. Hall for her experience at our pharmacy in Fountain Hills, Arizona last spring.

CVS responded to the situation in a statement on Friday, stating that the pharmacist was no longer employed by the chain because he had violated its company policies.

Pop culture junkie. Dolly Parton once ruffled my hair and said I was "just the cutest thing ever".

In her essay, Hall explained why she didn't want to engage with the pharmacist.

"CVS Health extends its honest apologies to Ms. Hall for her experience at our pharmacy in Fountain Hills, Arizona last spring", said Mike DeAngelis, senior director of corporate communications for CVS.

DeAngelo confirmed that the employee no longer works for CVS.

"I think now that this is on people's radar, they're more willing to talk about it", he said.

The employee's conduct "does not reflect our values or our commitment to inclusion, nondiscrimination and the delivery of outstanding patient care", CVS said. On Thursday, Hall said she chose to file a complaint to the Arizona State Board of Pharmacy saying something needed to be done.

The Arizona State Board of Pharmacy is investigating after Nicole Arteaga described in a viral Facebook post how she was publicly humiliated when attempting to fill the prescription to end her pregnancy - a pregnancy she wanted, but needed to terminate because she would ultimately miscarry.
