Tour de France: BMC win stage three team time trial

World champion Peter Sagan won a sprint finish to claim the second stage of the Tour de France and the race's overall lead on Sunday, while Chris Froome had a calmer ride after his tumble in the first leg.

The result means BMC's Greg van Avermaet has taken the yellow jersey from Peter Sagan, whose team Bora-hansgrohe set a time of 39:36 after dropping him.

Movistar could only manage 10th place on the day, 50 seconds off Team Sky's pace, which means Froome is nearly back on level terms with Mikel Landa and Alejandro Valverde, while Nairo Quintana dropped even further back after his opening day woes.

Of Porte's biggest rivals, Dutchman Tom Dumoulin is best-placed in third, 11 seconds behind Van Avermaet while Colombia's Rigoberto Uran and Denark's Jacob Fuglsgang are both 35 seconds down.

It repeated the team's success in 2015, the last time the Tour featured a team time-trial.

Van Avermaet earned the yellow jersey just ahead of American teammate Tejay van Garderen, who moved up to second overall, with the same time as Van Avermaet.

"It was a huge challenge for the team, it's been incredible for us", said the 33-year-old Briton who was jeered when his name was announced on the starting ramp.

Cormier's first round KO made him the first competitor to hold the Heavyweight and Light Heavyweight straps simultaneously. Once again, Holloway is unable to battle and this makes three consecutive matches where Holloway has turned up lame.

Their victory also helped Belgian team-mate Greg van Avermaet into the tour leaders yellow jersey.

Porte's BMC team had been expected to make up for their disappointing first day when their Australian leader fell.

Other riders suffered here, like French favourite Romain Bardet who lost significant time with Ag2r La Mondiale of more than a minute, and Movistar and Quintana who gave up 53 seconds. He also wore the yellow jersey in three stages at the Tour de France two years ago.

The latter's hopes of reclaiming the maillot jaune took an early hit, however, as he lost contact with the back of the Quick-Step train and the team split apart early in the stage.

"I still regret throwing away those 51 seconds on the first day, but there's a long way to go to Paris".

"Revenge? I already forgot about previous year", Sagan said.

Among the big losers today were Nairo Quintana, whose Movistar team came home 53 seconds down on BMC Racing, Bahrain-Merida with 2014 Tour de France victor Vincenzo Nibali, 1 minute and 6 seconds down, and Romain Bardet's AG2R-La Mondiale, who came home 1 minute 15 seconds behind the day's victor.

On Tuesday, the Tour will head to Brittany, as the riders start in La Baule and end in Sarzeau after a 195-kilometre route.
