Spain appoint Luis Enrique as new coach

Fernando Hierro will not continue as Spain coach, or return to his previous role as sporting director, following the World Cup, the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) has confirmed.

Spain's World Cup campaign descended into chaos just two days before their opening game with Portugal, as Lopetegui was sacked as a result of agreeing to join Real Madrid after the event.

Spain were beaten by tournament hosts Russian Federation on penalties in the last 16 following a 1-1 draw at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.

After their shocking campaign at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Spain have now announced a former FC Barcelona boss as their new coach. Andres Iniesta remains the only one to retire in the aftermath of that game, making Pique's predicament more pertinent with each passing day.

He has been out of work since leaving Barça last summer but has since been linked with Chelsea and Arsenal before Unai Emery filled the vacancy left by Arsène Wenger.

England fans 'dare to dream' after win over Sweden
It was England's eighth set-piece goal of its 11 in Russian Federation , and the center back's first in global soccer. For Southgate, that is more than just good PR.

A formal unveiling of Enrique is likely to happen next week and Rubiales said: 'We have not spoken to anybody else - only Luis Enrique'.

The former Porto manager didn't lose a single game in charge of the national team in the two years he was in charge but it was announced three days before their opening game against Portugal that he would become Real Madrid manager after the tournament.

Andres Iniesta, the former Barcelona great who scored the winning goal in the 2010 World Cup final, retired from the global team after the defeat to Russian Federation. Missed penalties from both Koke and Iago Aspas ensured an early exit for the 2010 World Cup champions.

The first press conference unveiled Jose Francisco Molina, 47, a former goalkeeper at Atletico Madrid and Deportivo La Coruna who played nine times for Spain, as the team's sporting director.
