Pompeo urges North Korea's Kim to follow Vietnam's example

Pompeo urges North Korea's Kim to follow Vietnam's example

The North Korean statement contradicted remarks made by U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who said just hours after departing North Korea that the two countries had made progress on several key issues.

But ever since the announcement of that summit, experts on North Korea have warned that Kim was very unlikely to give up his nuclear arsenal altogether, since it is his prime source of leverage against the rest of the world.

In a statement from the North's Foreign Ministry spokesman, the North bashed what it called "unilateral and gangster-like" US demands for denuclearization, adding that it jeopardizes the commitments made at last month's summit with President Donald Trump.

The statement came shortly after Pompeo said he had made progress "on nearly all of the central issues" in the talks, including on setting a timeline for its denuclearisation, though more work remained to be done.

However, it said that it could not help but feel regret about the attitude and stance the USA had.

'Our expectations and hopes were so naive it could be called foolish'.

North Korea says it is disappointed with the way the US has conducted itself in bilateral discussions, saying that the progress made at last month's historic summit in Singapore is in danger of being eroded.

The conflicting reports come at a tense time for North Korean-U.S. relations.

Interestingly, Pompeo's own statement appeared to try to spin the two-day visit as a success, saying a "great deal of progress" was made, and that more needs to be done, but not offering anything to suggest the talks ended badly.

Scientists said the northern white could make a similar recovery through conservation efforts that make use of frozen cell lines. In the meantime, the team will practice, implanting some of their hybrid embryos into SWR surrogates "to test the system".

North Korea's latest comments, which came after Pompeo said talks had made progress, are a reminder of the difficulties that previous US administrations have had negotiating with the reclusive Stalinist state and suggest that Pyongyang may not agree to any rapid denuclearisation.

Heather Nauert, a spokesperson for the state department, tweeted a number of photos during the talks, including one of a beaming Mr Pompeo pictured after the final meeting. And earlier in the day, he had a curiously testy exchange with Kim Yong Chol, who mused that the secretary may not have slept well the night before because of the important issues they had discussed. The US has insisted that North Korea give up its nuclear weapons for good before receiving relief from sanctions.

In fact, near the end of the statement, KCNA quoted the spokesman as saying "we still cherish our good faith in President Trump".

Speaking as Pompeo arrived in Tokyo, Nauert told reporters that the only thing Pompeo had left in Pyongyang was a letter to the North Korean leader from President Donald Trump. Switzerland has expressed a willingness to host the talks between North Korea and the US.

"At the same time, as long as the actions are to continue to keep economic pressure on North Korea, actions here will speak louder than words, and only those kinds of actions will ultimately bring North Korea to the place we'd like them to be", Blunt continued. He had said progress was made during the talks.

There was no immediate explanation of what needed to be clarified, but the two sides have been struggling to specify what exactly "denuclearization" would entail and how it could be verified to the satisfaction of the United States.

That statement is in contrast to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's.

He added that the United States also has to partner with Turkey to maintain a US troop presence in northeastern Syria to ward off Iran. North Korea committed at last month's summit to the "immediate repatriation" of remains already identified, but that hasn't happened yet.
