Pompeo, Japanese counterpart meet on North Korea

Trump's accusation came two days after North Korea called negotiations with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo last week in Pyongyang "deeply regrettable", with Washington pushing a "unilateral and gangster-like demand for denuclearisation".

In Tokyo on Sunday, Pompeo rejected the suggestion the two sides were far apart, describing North Korean officials as more receptive to U.S. demands behind closed doors.

Secretary Pompeo called the talks "productive" while North Korea accused the US of acting like a "gangster" with its demands.

After a lot of very encouraging diplomatic meetings, this is the first one met with any sign of serious stumbling blocks. "If I paid attention to what the press said, I'd go nuts, and I refuse to do that".

Unlike his previous visits, which have been one-day affairs during which he has met with Kim Jong Un, Pompeo spent the night at a government guesthouse in Pyongyang and did not see the North Korean leader, although U.S. officials had suggested such a meeting was expected.

While few think that the world would be better off with increased tensions between the USA and North Korea - except perhaps national security adviser John Bolton - Trump's pathetic attempts at diplomacy have squandered an actual opportunity to move toward long-term peace.

"The road ahead will be hard and challenging and we know that critics will try to minimise the work that we've achieved".

"I see China's hands all over this", said Graham after Pyongyang's dismissive remarks about Pompeo, adding that he thought the Chinese were "pulling back" North Korea because of the US-China trade dispute.

USA markets also garnered support from a government employment report showing better-than-expected growth in jobs. Saudi Arabia told Opec that it increased production by nearly 500,000 barrels per day last month.

Calling for a "phased and synchronous approach", the statement added: "This is incomparable with the irreversible step taken by (North Korea) to explode and dismantle the nuclear test ground". He said North Korea understood that denuclearization must be "complete" and 'verified'.

"I was there for the event", Pompeo said Sunday.

Speaking to members of the U.S.

The North Korean statement came in stark comparison to the hopeful words Pompeo had given reporters before boarding his plane to Tokyo, and appear to represent a setback to the process initiated between Kim and Trump last month. The promised remains have yet to be delivered.

Just hours after Pompeo arrived in Tokyo, the North blasted the discussions, saying the visit had been 'regrettable'.

While his talks with North Korean officials were conducted in good faith and they reaffirmed their commitment to abandoning nuclear weapons, he said, the U.S. sanctions against the nation will remain in place.

"We had expected that the United States side would offer constructive measures that would help build trust based on the spirit of the leaders' summit. we were also thinking about providing reciprocal measures", it said. "But this expectation and hope of ours were so naive as to be gullible".

North Korea's latest comments were a reminder of the difficulties that previous USA administrations had negotiating with the reclusive state.
