Liverpool close to securing Xherdan Shaqiri transfer

Liverpool are confident of making Xherdan Shaqiri their third summer signing after opening transfer talks with Stoke City over the Switzerland worldwide.

Liverpool have been linked with Shaqiri for weeks now, as they attempt to grab a bargain from relegated side Stoke, but it now appears that the move is drawing closer to reality.

A product of the Basel youth system, Shaqiri has spent the last three seasons at the Brittania, coming over from Inter for a then-club record £12 million.

Mr Stanton told reporters: "This was completely uncharted, unprecedented territory and nothing like this has been done. The boys were held close to the divers and remained motionless for parts of the journey where they had to dive.

One of Switzerland's star performances in Russian Federation, his last-minute victor against Serbia sent the side through to the World Cup's round of 16 before their campaign drew to a close with a defeat to Sweden. The Reds are one of a number of clubs to approach Stoke City, but there is little room or need for negotiations as he has a release clause of just over £13million.

Liverpool have already strengthened their squad this summer with the £39m signing of Monaco midfielder Fabinho and the arrival of Naby Keita from RB Leipzig.

His side take on League Two outfit Bury on Saturday before a midweek game against Blackburn Rovers. Shaqiri could be signed in time to play a part in that trip. A deal for the Lyon captain may yet be resurrected after France's World Cup campaign, however.
