How to use Netflix’s new ‘Smart Downloads’ feature

The feature won't have a major impact on device storage as it deletes the last watched episode before downloading the next one.

The company said the aim of the new downloading features is to remove the hassle of navigating through files and deleting download episodes manually. Users can have multiple episodes of a TV series downloaded at once, but they typically don't download entire seasons.

Netflix just launched an update to the "Download" feature for mobile phone users. Of course, Netflix requires a paid subscription in order to watch or download movies or TV shows, something which we're sure you know about already. So if you finish watching a season finale on your commute into work, you can connect to your office Wi-Fi and the next season's premiere will be waiting for you on your ride home.

The following video shows you Smart Downloads at work, while this help page should provide more information on how to make it work on your mobile device. The feature is only being introduced on Android phones and tablets at this time, but Netflix indicates it'll be available on iOS in the future, as well. Smart downloads does that automatically. In the "My Downloads" section, users must select Smart Downloads and toggle it on or off. Users will also be able to toggle the feature from the App Settings by tapping the Menu icon and selecting App Settings. And odds are, it'll mean that when you sit down to watch TV, there will be a new episode there for you without you even realizing it. We assume it will delete the final few episodes from your device and then simply not download anything after, but you'll have to test it out to see if that's true. And smart downloads will progress into the next season of a series.
