Cop under investigation after ignoring woman's pleas for help from drunk man

The incident occurred on June 14, but the video went viral several weeks later, on July 9, when it was posted on social media by the news outlet NowThis.

Rep. Luis Gutiérrez (D-Ill.) said Tuesday that "a culture of bigotry & hate" that has been condoned in the USA "feels unleashed", citing a video showing a man harassing a woman for wearing a Puerto Rican flag shirt.

"Hopefully, this officer will actually do something", Irizarry is heard saying when the second officer arrives. "You should be wearing United States of America flag", he said.

Irizarry, who was renting out the area for her birthday, flagged down a park police officer and asked for help.

"You should not be wearing that in the United States of America", the man tells Irizarry. "Then you should not be wearing that".

The harassment continued, as Irizarry repeatedly called on the officer for help, asking, "Is there anything you can do?"

More officers then arrive at the scene and a female cop sits Trybus down and threatens to charge him.

"As you can see, the police, he's not even grabbing him", Irizarry says to her viewers. Like this guy is just walking up to me.

"Officer, I feel highly uncomfortable".

"All people are welcome in the Forest Preserves of Cook County, and no one should feel unsafe while visiting our preserves".

The officer has since been reassigned to administrative duty, pending the outcome of an investigation.

On Monday, Forest Preserves of Cook County tweeted that it was aware of the June 14 incident and video.

Gutiérrez added that he's not sure what upsets him more about the video.

Gov. Rossello wrote on Twitter that he is "appalled, shocked & disturbed by the officer's behavior..."

The unidentified harasser, who park officers say was intoxicated, was arrested and charged with assault and disorderly conduct. "We will be looking into this incident as our offices in DC are in contact with local and state authorities, demanding that this officer be expelled from the police force". "The Forest Preserves immediately launched an investigation into the incident", she tweeted.

Puerto Rican residents have been American citizens since 1917. "He failed to deescalate the situation and therefore did not ensure a citizen's safety", Rosselló tweeted.

"Well, I guess you just never know", replied Irizarry.

"We all should care because we are decent human beings & need to stand up to bigotry & bullies", he said. In an agitated tone the man says, "We don't own Puerto Rico".

The park location was not identified in the Facebook post, but a Twitter army tracked the location as one of the areas supervised by the Forest Preserves Department of Cook County, which includes Chicago. From 1917, Puerto Rican residents have been US citizens and have the ability to vote in USA presidential primaries, though not in presidential elections.

The Trump administration has received criticism for its treatment of Puerto Rico, particularly for its response after Hurricane Maria struck last September.

"Puerto Ricans have been part of the United States", Rosello reminded viewers.
