Beryl intensifies to a Category 1 hurricane

Beryl intensifies to a Category 1 hurricane

"Beryl is forecast to be near hurricane strength when it approaches the Lesser Antilles Sunday night or Monday, and the chance of some islands receiving direct impacts from wind and rainfall continue to increase", NHC forecasters said. Hurricane Beryl, now southeast of the Lesser Antilles in the southern Caribbean, is considered a small storm, creating some uncertainty about the analysis, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center.

Tropical Storm Beryl is at this time about 720 miles off of the Lesser Antilles and has maximum sustained winds of 65 miles per hour or 100 km per hour.

Hurricane Beryl became the first hurricane of this year's Atlantic hurricane season Friday morning after gaining strength overnight.

This graphic from the National Hurricane Center shows the projected path of Tropical Storm Beryl on Saturday, July 7, 2018. The depression should slow down and meander of well offshore of the coast of North Carolina through Monday.

The system is expected weaken in the next 48 hrs when it reaches the eastern Caribbean Sea on Monday.

Strong wind shear and dry air is expected to end Beryl's run before it reaches the United States.

Small storms can morph quickly - Beryl flared up from a depression Thursday morning to a hurricane in less than 24 hours. Over the weekend, it's expected to speed up.

Rebels in southern Syria 'reach ceasefire deal' with Russian Federation
Daraa province encompasses most of the area held by rebels in the southwest, one of their last remaining strongholds in Syria. The offensive has swept into swathes of rebel-held territory in Deraa province, helped by heavy Russian air strikes.

Beryl should impact the islands as a tropical storm.

There are now both a tropical depression and a hurricane spinning in the Atlantic, but for now, neither appears to be a threat to SC of the U.S. It is a very compact hurricane with hurricane-force winds extending out only 10 miles from the center.

Earlier this week, the tropical meteorology research team at Colorado State University (CSU) Department of Atmospheric Sciences made adjustments to the original Atlantic Hurricane season forecast released back in early April.

The National Hurricane Center plans updated forecasts every six hours until Beryl dissipates, likely on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, a tropical depression formed in the Atlantic well off the North Carolina coast, but forecasters said it wasnt expected to pose any threat to land.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has confirmed that a storm named Beryl is the first hurricane of the 2018 season.
