Your internet use could change as 'net neutrality' ends

Ellis SchumerDem leaders condemn Trump after reversal on G-7 communique endorsement Dem lawmaker: Trump conceding "role as leader of the free world" after G-7 summit Schumer: Trump "turning our foreign policy into an global joke" MORE (D-N.Y) is blaming congressional Republicans for the repeal of the Federal Communications Commission's (FCC) net neutrality rules, a shift which goes into effect Monday. But what's more likely to occur are subtle changes to your Internet experience that you may or may not notice.

Enacted in 2015, the rules sought to stop providers giving preferential treatment to sites and services that paid them to accelerate their data.

But net neutrality supporters say that without the rules, the industry will be able to wield an alarming amount of influence over the internet.

The FCC's approval of those rules was the result of a decadelong fight on behalf of the public - and against the forces of special interests that spent hundreds of millions of dollars on lawyers, public relations firms, lobbyists and campaign contributions in their quest to take over the internet. The state bill went into effect as soon as net neutrality expired on a federal level (which happened today), and it will prevent internet service providers from creating "slow" and "fast" lanes on the internet.

Pai, who is a former attorney for Verizon, doubled down on his stance that repealing net neutrality rules was the right call.

The net neutrality rules are no longer the law of the land. The idea was to keep the internet open and uncensored. As part of this effort, more than 16.5 million pro-net neutrality emails have been sent to Congress.

Two states, OR and Washington, have passed net neutrality laws and 29 states are considering legislation, which could lead to new legal battles over Internet laws. Under the new guidelines, ISPs can block, throttle, or prioritize internet content as much as they like, as long as they clearly disclose to customers that that's what they're doing. Others, including the governors of Montana and NY, used executive orders to force net neutrality.

Putin calls for boosting trade ties among SCO members
Putin said that Washington's decision to exit the agreement could "destabilize the situation" in the region. He added that Moscow will continue to honour its obligations under the Iranian nuclear deal.

As for Congress, the Senate issued a vote to overturn the decision in May and the House of Representatives now has the opportunity to do the same.

"ISPs could curate what online content and services most people will have access to, and which ones will only be available to those who are willing to and can afford to pay extra", Schaub added.

Last month, the Senate passed a measure to preserve the net neutrality rules.

A more urgent battle is brewing in several states, which are passing their versions of net neutrality rules in defiance of the federal repeal.

Jessica Rosenworcel, a Democrat on the FCC, said in prepared remarks Saturday that the FCC had puts itself "on the wrong side of history, the wrong side of the law, and the wrong side of the American public".

Net neutrality is the basic principle that all internet traffic should be be treated equally.
