Trump says United States not to endorse G7 communique

It follows a chaotic G7 summit in Quebec at the weekend, when United States president Donald Trump withdrew his endorsement of a joint communique, accusing Mr Trudeau of being "dishonest and weak".

Merkel said she first found out about Trump's decision on the flight back from Canada.

A Trudeau spokesman, Cameron Ahmad, said last night that Mr Trudeau "said nothing he hasn't said before - both in public and in private conversations" with Mr Trump.

Trump, who was headed to Singapore for a summit with North Korean leaders, criticized Trudeau for making "false statements" at a news conference held after Trump had left Canada. He will miss the climate session of the G7 summit.

Trump's fellow G7 leaders watched him as he slowly made his way to his seat, which was across from Trudeau and next to International Monetary Fund managing director Christine Lagarde.

He said he gets along well with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Emmanuel Macron, and Trudeau.

"If the expectation was that a weekend in handsome Charlevoix....was going to transform the president's outlook on trade and the world, then we didn't quite reach that bar", Trudeau said.

"I'm going back a long way. It just got worse and worse and worse".

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) said it was wrong for Trump to pull out of the joint G7 communique that would have showed solidarity with America's best allies. When I'm telling them, they're smiling at me. He really actually, you know what?

Europe will not let Trump do "whatever he pleases", the German chancellor said, adding that "we will not allow ourselves to be deceived again and again".

"I think it would be an asset to have Russian Federation back in, I think it would be good for the world, I think it would be good for Russian Federation, I think it would be good for the United States, I think it would be good for all the countries of the current G7".

The German chancellor also said she is not ready to "give up on G7" but would seek dialogue with Russian Federation and try to "work very closely" with Japan, Canada, India and China.

Russian Federation was expelled following Vladimir Putin's annexation of Crimea in 2014, which Mr Trump characterised as "something happened a while ago".

She said that she still believes Trump shares the principled stance of the G7 on "many issues".

And he said his recent imposition of punishing steel and aluminum tariffs was based on legitimate national security concerns, rebuffing the concerns of allies. He went on to announce that the United States would be looking to impose tariffs on vehicle imports.

In response, the European Union is preparing new tariffs set to hit USA exports ranging from jeans to bourbon whiskey. "As an example, 270 per cent, nobody knows that".

Earlier this year, President Trump announced that the USA would withdraw from the Iran nuclear agreement, which has sparked backlash among allies.

In return, Mr Trump made the French president his guest at his first White House state dinner, after which the U.S. president said of his visitor: "I like him a lot". She also praised the joint statement itself as a "laboriously negotiated" document.
