Trump pummels G-7 democratic allies

German Chancellor Angela Merkel found the contentious Group of Seven summit with U.S. President Donald Trump a "sobering" and "depressing" experience but said European leaders won't be "taken advantage of" on trade.

Anticipating a tense two days in Quebec, Trump has complained about having to attend the summit, particularly since it comes just before his high-stakes meeting in Singapore with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, said two people with knowledge of his thinking.

Europe will implement counter-measures against U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminium, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Sunday, voicing regret about President Donald Trump's abrupt decision to withdraw support for a Group of Seven communique.

Earlier, Mr Trudeau had spoken of retaliatory measures that Canada would take next month in response to Mr Trump's decision to slap tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, Mexico and the European Union. "They should let Russian Federation come back in because we should have Russian Federation at the negotiating table", the USA leader said before boarding the presidential jet.

In response to Mr Trump's decision to withhold United States support for the summit conclusions, a senior United Kingdom government source said: "We stand by the commitments made in the G7 communique". In addition to the USA and Canada, the group includes Britain, Italy, France, Germany and Japan.

Trump continued his tough talk on trade as he prepared to head to the meeting, arguing that the U.S.is being treated very unfairly on trade.

The annual G-7 summit appeared to have weathered tensions over President Donald Trump's threats of a trade war. In one picture, while the former USA president is seen engaging in talks with the experts, in the other picture he can be seen sharing a light moment with Angela Merkel with watching the European soccer match.

As a result, at the G-8, minus Russia's meeting in Canada last weekend, the headlines read, "The world against the United States".

Mr Trump will skip G7 meetings about climate change, clean energy and ocean protection.

The increasingly critical tone from allies is a shift after leaders spent the past year and a half seeking to woo and cajole the American president. They include the US trade war with Europe, climate change, relations with Iran and the Israel-Palestinian conflict.

Like Canada, the European Union is preparing counter-measures against USA tariffs on steel and aluminium imports, in line with World Trade Organisation rules, Merkel said.

Closer home, Indian Twitter users spotted an opportunity to make the photo more relatable by editing Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Trump's place, asking when they would receive the Rs 15 lakhs Bharatiya Janata Party leaders promised each Indian would receive if they were voted into power in 2014.
