Trump meets Kim in landmark Singapore summit

Kim, dressed in a dark suit, and Trump, sporting a red tie, talked in a corner of the hotel corridor for a few minutes before they walked along the passage into the meeting room and sat down in front of journalists.

In late March, Trump tweeted with messages of optimism about "denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula", with mention that Kim would do "what is right for his people and for humanity".

As the two flags hung side-by-side in the backdrop for the first time ever, both Kim and Trump expressed hope that their summit would be fruitful.

At a press conference earlier on Sunday, Loong said that the summit cost approximately $20 million, which is a price the Singapore was "willing to pay". Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) mentioned that the summit is being held "under the great attention and expectation of the whole world".

Pompeo said the U.S.is prepared to offer "unique" security guarantees to North Korea to ensure that eliminating its nuclear weapons won't end badly for Kim's regime.

The US side however reportedly believes that an immediate tangible outcome is unlikely following the meet.

Mr Trump said he was feeling "really great" and Mr Kim said North Korea and the USA had overcome obstacles to be able to hold talks, saying it "was not easy to get here".

The two leaders first met privately with interpreters, and then with members of their respective delegations.

The pair made brief remarks as they sat together before the world's media as the historic summit got under way, with the U.S. leader insisting "we will have a terrific relationship I have no doubt". The stagecraft was highly choreographed, but the results of the talks are still unknown: Both mercurial men entered the summit claiming to support "denuclearization of the Korean peninsula", but neither has defined what that means, or what it will take to get there.

Just meeting with Trump marks a diplomatic accomplishment for Kim, who has emerged from isolation in recent months and rapidly increased his outreach to other world leaders.

The summit marked the first between a sitting USA president and a North Korean leader.

Kim stood silently alongside, but the North Korean leader had earlier described their meeting as a "a good prelude to peace". "I join all the people in ardently aspiring for the success of the summit to bring complete denuclearization and peace to us".

On Saturday, Singaporean Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan told reporters at Beijing Capital International Airport that his country would give the same warm welcome to the North Koreans as they have done to other state guests. The agreement doesn't appear to contain any firm promises from Pyongyang to abandon its nuclear weapon program, but rather, opens the door to ongoing discussions.
