'The Band's Visit' sweeps Tony Awards as 'Harry Potter' wins best play

De Niro said of Springsteen: "Bruce, you can rock the house like nobody else and even more importantly in these perilous times, you rock the vote, always fighting for, in your own words, truth, transparency and integrity in government". And before you knew it, almost everyone in the audience at Radio City Music Hall was on their feet.

According to US Today, Tony Award victor John Tiffany, who won for his role in the hit Broadway show Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, was making his way into the media room just as the Meet The Focker's actor went rogue.

The brief, nearly token, insult provoked a disproportionately strong reaction from the audience at New York's Radio City Music Hall.

Nathan Lane took home his third Tony award for Angels In America as closeted conservative lawyer Roy Cohn, who died of AIDS.

Notable Nominations: Leading the pool of nominations this year are Mean Girls and SpongeBob SquarePants: The Musical, each with 12 and both up for the coveted Best Musical accolade.

"In 'The Band's Visit, ' music gives people hope and makes borders disappear", producer Orin Wolf said upon accepting the best new musical crown, saying It offers a message of unity in a world that "more and more seems bent on amplifying our differences". She told the crowd how early in her career, she'd been encouraged to change her last name to Matthews to better her chances of playing non-minority roles. F*ck Trump." The audience cheered and applauded as he added: "It's no longer down with Trump. "Who's gonna argue with him?"

And - in something of a surprise - Steppenwolf Theatre ensemble member and "Roseanne" star Laurie Metcalf capped off an extraordinary career renaissance by winning a Tony for best featured actress in a play for her illuminative work at the core of Joe Mantello's widely acclaimed revival of Edward Albee's "Three Tall Women".

This charming show beat back stiff challenges from two revivals of American musical-theater classics: "Carousel" and "My Fair Lady".

Meanwhile, Robert De Niro thumbed his nose at President Trump when, before introducing his friend Bruce Springsteen, he said, "I just want to say one thing".
