But the company has also heavily promoted its cars' supercharged ability to fend for itself: The Tesla website promises "Full Self-Driving Hardware on All Cars", which it says offer "a safety level substantially greater than that of a human driver".

"To date, Autopilot resources have rightly focused entirely on safety", Elon Musk tweeted. "With V9, we will begin to enable full self-driving features".

According to the NTSB report, the driver was using the vehicle's traffic-aware cruise control and autosteer lane-keeping assistance technology while driving on the US Highway 101, when it approached the exit to State Highway 85.

But now with the upcoming software update Musk claimed that the update would bring "full self-driving features" to the Tesla's vehicle would be able to drive itself. What does that really mean?

The system has come under scrutiny recently after a number of crashes being reported with the system active, the most prolific of which, resulting in a fatality when it was purportedly enabled.

After an Uber self-driving vehicle earlier this year killed a pedestrian in Arizona, investigators said the automatic braking system had been disabled.

A Model S recall, fears about Tesla running out of cash and high profile crashes involving Tesla vehicles that were in Autopilot mode also hurt the company. Tesla has been going through trying times with the production of the Model 3 not going as planned but is expected to reach the target soon.

Musk gave more details about the forthcoming SpaceX version of Tesla's Roadster in a separate tweet Sunday.

"SpaceX option package for new Tesla Roadster will include ~10 small rocket thrusters arranged seamlessly around vehicle", Musk wrote. The Tesla Roadster will hit 100mph 2.3 seconds later, and Musk says it'll have a top speed of something like 250 miles per hour.

Tesla owners will receive an automatic upgrade to their vehicles' self-driving software, the company's CEO Elon Musk has revealed in a tweet.

It's tempting to see this as a joke.

Musk replied: "You have my word, Marques".
