Tennessee children caught on camera traveling in pet kennels, woman arrested

Authorities say a Memphis woman was arrested after video showed her transporting two children in pet kennels.

The children, one seven and one eight- years-old also reportedly said that Cheeks claimed they couldn't sit inside the trucks because there wasn't enough room.

Cheeks, 62 has been charged with two counts of child endangerment.

Temperatures in Memphis, Tennessee, reached up to 33 degrees on Saturday.

The Commercial Appeal obtained video appearing to show Cheeks letting a girl out of one of the kennels and closing the metal grate behind her.

Skylarr Blake, Cheeks' neighbor, told WATN that Cheeks was a "nice lady" and that he couldn't "see her doing that". "For them to be in the hot vehicle like that in cages is sad", neighbor Nikita Blake told WREG.

Neighbors of Cheeks stated that she had recently purchased two German shepherd puppies and her actions were totally out of character.

Once arrested a day later, Cheeks told cops that she put the kids in the kennels because she had run out of space in the auto.

The incident was filmed on cell phone on Saturday by a man who happened to drive pass as the children were exiting from the vehicle.

However, a local news source WREG reported that neighbours know Cheeks to be a wonderful woman and was unlikely to let the children go through that situation. "Wow", neighbor Skylark Blake said.

At the time of her arrest, Cheeks of Whitehaven admitted driving several miles with the children, aged 7 and 8 years old inside the dog kennels. Their grandmother is scheduled to be in court Monday morning at 9 a.m. Police said the vehicle was not air conditioned. She was being held in Shelby County Jail on Sunday night.
