The alliance of United States, Mexico and Canada was awarded the 2026 World Cup by Federation Internationale de Football Association this morning, bringing the premier event in worldwide sports back to the US after a 32-year absence. "And in that spirit we wish all Russian hosts and all the teams competing here the very best of luck". Canada, Mexico and the US are home to a combined 491 million people and two of the world's biggest media markets. Like Canada, Japan had previously qualified for only one World Cup. United States of America will regroup in the coming years and attempt to clinch a spot in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar before turning its attention to home pursuits. US cities in the running include Pasadena, California; Atlanta; Arlington, Texas and East Rutherford, New Jersey, for key games including semifinals and finals.

"Thank you for entrusting us with the privilege of hosting the FIFA World Cup in 2026", Carlos Cordiero, the president of US Soccer told the delegates from more than 200 member nations following the vote.

The United States held the World Cup in 1994 while Mexico held it in 1986.

The 1994 World Cup, staged by the U.S., had the highest average attendance in the tournament's history, while Mexico was the first nation to host the event twice. Morocco had been a late entrant to the 2026 race and its projected profits were half of the USA bid.

Five times they have bid, and five times they have been overlooked - Morocco are perhaps destined to never host a World Cup.

The runaway success of the North American bid was no guarantee as little as four months ago, despite vastly superior infrastructure and the promise of billions in more revenue.

For Morocco, it was the fifth time it had bid for the hosting rights to the football World Cup, calling it "the dream of a nation".

Although it would be the first tournament to be hosted by three nations, the vast majority of games will be held in the US.

With as neutral an expression as possible, she stares directly at President Trump, who sits on the other side of the table. The internet has not spared the photo, exploding the worldwide space with memes and quotes captioning it.

The FIFA president, who had first walked off in the wrong direction to welcome Putin, who then appeared on the other end, returned the compliments.

Part of the United bid guaranteed all games would be played on natural grass, which means if Commonwealth Stadium is chosen as a final venue, the artificial turf would be replaced for the tournament.

"The 2026 World Cup is coming to Canada, the U.S. & Mexico!"

It will be the first World Cup to be expanded to 48 teams, posing an enormous logistical challenge for the hosts, one of the issues that is thought to have undermined the Moroccan bid.

Meanwhile, Ghana's absence comes as a blow to Morocco who had won the support of Ghana over joint bidders United States, Mexico and Canada.

"In this case, the province has a key decision to make before we can move forward."

Iveson said host cities need between about $30 to $50 million to cover transportation and security costs and other improvement, and that he is looking for provincial money to help support that bid.
