Rafael Nadal's French Open set streak ends in quarterfinals

"I have no expectations, no pressure", said Halep after seeing off German 12th seed Angelique Kerber 6-7 (2/7), 6-3, 6-2 in the quarter-finals on Wednesday.

Halep is still chasing her first Grand Slam title.

Garbine Muguruza's big strokes overwhelmed Maria Sharapova right from the start.

The two met in the semifinals earlier this year at the Australian Open, with Halep prevailing 9-7 in a third set there.

Thoroughly and clinically outplayed by Muguruza in every respect, Sharapova looked uncomfortable and off-balance for most of her brief stint on court and had a particularly deflating second set in which she logged two winners to 15 unforced errors.

Two-time major victor Kerber raced into a 4-0 lead in the first set before having to rely on a tiebreak to nudge her ahead. While Sharapova wasn't prominent in the conversation to add a third title to her résumé, she looked as if she belonged in the second week, which ended with rising commotion around a scheduled fourth-round clash against arch-nemesis Serena Williams. Muguruza isn't giving he opponent many chances to breathe, and that's the reason for her quick success in these recent matches.

But it was the German who started the stronger, out-hitting her rival with lethal accuracy, to win the first four games as Halep struggled to find her serving rhythm and peppered the tramlines with unforced errors.

"I missed a lot in the beginning". Off the baseline, Stephens will bait Keys to go for too much, using her speed and counter-punching ability to shrink the court. But, I mean, I think she made everyone wait a little bit'.

Two past U.S. Open champions meet in the other men's quarterfinal: No. 3 Marin Cilic against No. 5 Juan Martin del Potro.

Wimbledon champion Muguruza took just 70 minutes to brush her aside 6-2, 6-1 and make the semi-finals at what is looking like one of the fortnights when she runs hot. Sharapova was the French Open champion in 2012 and 2014; Muguruza took the trophy in 2016.

Muguruza made light work of Sharapova as she utterly dominated their quarter-final.

No. 3 seed Muguruza professed not to know that she could overtake current world No. 1 Simona Halep of Romania by winning the Thursday semifinal. She went on to commit only 16 errors over the course of the next two, which was the difference in getting the win.

Now third in the WTA leaderboard behind Halep and Caroline Wozniacki, Muguruza will rise above them both to sit atop of the rankings with a win on Thursday. "If I do that, I will be OK after the match, no matter the result".

The top seed is a two-time runner-up at Roland Garros but was forced to dig deep against the German, who is enjoying a fine recovery year after a hard 2017, as Kerber stormed into the lead.
