Kim Jong Un goes for surprise nighttime walk ahead of summit

After shaking hands with Singapore's foreign minister, Kim sped through the streets in a limousine, two large North Korean flags fluttering on the hood, surrounded by other black vehicles with tinted windows and bound for the luxurious and closely guarded St. Regis Hotel.

Regardless, Trump seemed determined to keep his meeting with Kim low-key, dangling the possibility of a future summit in the US if things go well this week.

By sitting down with an American president - a longtime goal of North Korea's government - Kim's regime is advancing its effort to establish its "reputation, respect, and credibility as a nuclear weapon state", Green said.

"Just the opposite: that it leads to a brighter and better future for the North Korean people".

"We don't know how developed North Korea's secure communications capabilities are, so whether Kim Jong Un will be within easy reach of his National Command Authority during his stay in Singapore is an open question", said Andrew O'Neil, a North Korea nuclear policy expert at Griffith University in Queensland, Australia. Trump and Kim planned to meet one-on-one for most of an hour- joined only by translators.

The official did not rule out the possibility that additional activities could be added to tomorrow's schedule, beyond the two planned meetings with Kim, ABC News' Jordyn Phelps reports.

Following their initial greeting, Trump and Kim will meet face-to-face without any staffers, then for an expanded meeting and a working lunch, the statement said.

He said last week that he expects to know "within the first minute" of their meeting if Kim is serious about giving up his weapons. In fact, only hours before the White House announcement, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had seemed to lower expectations for the meeting, which Trump had earlier predicted could potentially yield an on-the-spot deal to end the Korean War.

The clearest benchmarks about what the U.S.is seeking from the summit, however, have come from Pompeo rather than Trump. But Trump has lashed out at reporters for suggesting that the meeting with Kim will result in him giving up any negotiating leverage. "I feel that Kim Jong Un wants to do something great for his people and he has that opportunity".

Trump had been scheduled to fly back to Washington on Wednesday morning after spending Tuesday with the North Korean leader in Singapore. Trump had previously said the talks might extend beyond the first day.

Plans for the meeting almost foundered after Trump abruptly withdrew in May, citing North Korea's "open hostility" during negotiations.

Pompeo spoke as top officials from the two countries continued negotiations in Singapore ahead of the meeting between Trump and Kim.
