Kim Jong Un and Donald Trump in Singapore for historic summit

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced this on Sunday, adding that the June 12 summit will give Singapore global publicity and demonstrate the country's standing in the worldwide community. It will be the first time a sitting US president has met with a North Korean leader.

When asked upon landing in Singapore how he was feeling about the encounter, Trump gave a brief answer: "Very good". Kim is hoping Trump will relieve the economic sanctions that have crippled the North Korean economy.

She said Sung Kim, the USA ambassador to the Philippines, who has taken the lead on policy negotiations with the North, was set to hold a working group with a North Korean delegation at 10 a.m. Monday.

The United States and North Korea have been in a technical state of war for decades after the eruption of the 1950-1953 Korean War, which pitted U.S. -led U.N. troops backing Seoul against Pyongyang's forces that were aided by China.

The White House said the daylong summit would also include a working lunch and a larger meeting involving aides to both leaders.

The trip to Singapore - nearly 5,000 kilometers (3,000 miles) south of Pyongyang - represents Kim's farthest trip from home since taking power after his father's death in 2011.

Howard has been making quite a splash on social media, posing alongside Donald Trump impersonator Dennis Alan, holding an unofficial summit of their own on the sidelines.

Pompeo has maintained that complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization is the "only outcome" acceptable to the US and that the Trump administration hopes ultimately to reach an agreement with the North Koreans that it can submit to Congress "so that when administrations do change, as they inevitably do, and this one will ... that Chairman Kim will have comfort that American policy will continue down the same path". At the same time, Trump stressed that Washington would not accept Pyongyang's refusal to denuclearize.

At the Capella hotel on Singapore's Sentosa island, a popular resort destination, Trump and Kim will first meet at 9 a.m. local time on Tuesday (9 p.m. ET Monday) for a handshake and photo op.

Hammering out a complete plan for North Korea's denuclearization would be "an impossible chore" at this summit, Michael O'Hanlon of the Brookings Institution told NPR.

Exuding confidence, Trump said he has done relatively little formal preparation.

"I think we're going to have a relationship, and it will start on June 12", Trump said at the time.

"I feel that Kim Jong-Un wants to do something great for his people".

"It will certainly be an exciting day and I know that Kim Jong-un will work very hard to do something that has rarely been done before".

He had his first formal meeting of the summit with the prime minister of Singapore, Lee Hsien Loong.
