Apple Gets Personal at WWDC With Privacy Tools, 'Memoji'

"In Safari, enhanced Intelligent Tracking Prevention helps block social media "Like" or "Share" buttons and comment widgets from tracking users without permission", Apple said in a statement.

Users will have the option, via a pop-up notification, to stop a tracker following them across the web.

If you don't confirm you want to use the Like or Share buttons or leave a comment, they won't be able to track your data at all.

The latest privacy updates, among a host of others, were unveiled on the WWDC stage by Craig Federighi, Apple senior VP of software engineering, who said: "There can be a lot of sensitive data on your devices, and we think you should be in control of who sees it".

Years ago, Steve Jobs claimed Apple's objective was to merge technology and the liberal arts; we are the human tech company, he implied, and the new privacy features that challenge Facebook and Google seem to be in that tradition. Safari now also presents simplified system information when users browse the web, preventing them from being tracked based on their system configuration.

We are just days away from Apple's 2018 World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) to kick off. "These can be used to track you, whether you click on them or not".

Another pro-privacy enhancement detailed by Federighi yesterday is meant to counter browser fingerprinting techniques that are also used to track users from site to site - and which can be a way of doing so even when/if tracking cookies are cleared.

Meghan Markle’s future daughters won’t have royal title
A court circular published today also reveals that the royals will officially open the Mersey Gateway Bridge on the same day. The duchess paid tribute to the Queen as an "incredible woman" when she described her first meetings with the head of state.

In fact, Apple was fairly forthcoming in calling out the practices of "data companies", practices that put or weaken privacy of users, at its developer event. Now all we have to do is respect the limits we set for ourselves. Faster and More Responsive iOS 12 is created to make everyday tasks on iPhone and iPad faster and more responsive with performance improvements across the system. We show them only built-in fonts. Because legacy plugins are no longer supported, they also can't be used to contribute to a fingerprint.

The result would make most Macs look identical, making it harder for individual devices to be identified, Apple said. "We weren't in the data business".

ITP 2.0 will also downgrade the referrer header of a webpage that a tracker can receive to "just the page's origin for third party requests to domains that the system has classified as possible trackers and which have not received user interaction" (Apple specifies this is not just a visit to a site but must include an interaction such as a tap/click).

Apple has been making changes to its products to limit the amount of data consumers share with advertisers. Which is a very clear privacy win.

Immediately following the WWDC 2018 keynote today, Apple has released the first developer betas of iOS 12, macOS Mojave, tvOS 12, and watchOS 5.

Built-in macOS apps such as Finder and Desktop have been improved to allow users to sort through files better with Stacks and more information in the Preview pane.
