Women in Donegal may have received incorrect smear results

A new helpline has been set up following the recent announcement that a number of patients were given incorrect test results at the time of the Cervical Cancer tests.

Solicitor for Ms Phelan, Cian O'Carroll, told RTÉ's This Week that the defence documents lodged in the court case by the State contradict the terms of the apology issued last week.

Ms. Phelan (43), was given incorrect test results and is now terminally ill with cervical cancer.

At the beginning of today the court was told the case had now settled and the argument against the HSE could be hit out with no request.

A portion of the settlement will be paid into court and be held for the couple's two children who are now aged seven and 12.

Earlier this week, she settled her High Court action against a United States laboratory for €2.5 million.

In 2011, Vicky Phelan was told there were no abnormalities found in the smear sample sent to Clinical Pathology Laboratories Inc.in Austin, Texas.

The defence documents filed did admit there was some delay informing her about her smear test results.

The HSE has said that some of the women who were not told about false negative smear test results no longer lived in Ireland and it may be hard to contact them.

More than 200 women developed cervical cancer after a misdiagnosed smear as part of a free national screening programme.

Fianna Fail health spokesman Stephen Donnelly said the Government still has many questions to answer over the handling "of a litany of errors relating to the cervical cancer screening programme".

It was asserted that ensuing to her cancer finding and obscure to her an audit was completed of past spread tests from ladies who had a cancer determination.

"Figures from National Cancer Registry Ireland show that the cervical cancer rate in Ireland has reduced significantly as a direct result of the CervicalCheck programme".

According to the HSE, nearly 1,500 cases of cervical cancer have been notified to the cervical screening programme, CervicalCheck, since it began a decade ago.

"Despite these achievements, every diagnosis of cervical cancer is one too many and we acknowledge the impact of this disease on women and their families".
