Why you must catch up on lost sleep in weekends

Why you must catch up on lost sleep in weekends

"The results imply that short (weekday) sleep is not a risk factor for mortality if it is combined with a medium or long weekend sleep", researchers wrote in a press release.

There are few things in life more satisfying than crawling into bed on Friday night knowing you'll get a well-deserved lie-on in the morning.

Researchers surveyed around 44,000 people in Sweden about their sleep habits, and followed up after 13 years to see who was still alive.

"The mortality rate among participants with short sleep during weekdays, but long sleep during weekends, did not differ from the rate of the reference group", the study, published in the Journal of Sleep, said.

Desert Locust Alert: Tropical Cyclone Mekunu (23 May)
An Omani man walks on the road covered by the flood water after Cyclone Merkunu in Salalah, Oman , Saturday, May 26, 2018. The officials said heavy rains pummeled Yemen's easternmost province of al-Mahra, along the nation's border with Oman .

"Apparently, sleeping in in on the weekends can be a real help", said Åkerstedt, a professor and director of the Stress Research Institute at Stockholm University.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends adults aged 18-60 get at least seven hours of sleep per night. However, they also found that people who slept for five or fewer hours during the work week and then increased the amount they slept during the weekends experienced the same levels of mortality as people who had healthy sleep schedules throughout the entire week. "If you can function on what you get, you are likely getting the right amount of sleep", Åkerstedt noted.

For people over 65-years-old there is no link between sleep duration and a heightened risk of death. Probably. But do I feel somewhat like human being again after two days of sleeping late? "Perhaps it's giving them hope that this habit is in some way good for them".
