Saints' Ingram appeals four-game suspension

Mark Ingram's representation says the Saints running back will challenge the NFL's four game suspension handed down yesterday.

Ingram's agents suggested in their statement that they may explore further options once they review the arbitrator's full opinion, which is due by May 16.

Ingram "vigorously challenged" his four-game suspension, according to a statement from his agents, saying that he tested positive for a substance that was "permissible with the proper use exemption with the National Football League". He has vigorously challenged the test results through the arbitration process.

The Saints will start the season without Mark Ingram's services.

Ingram has played seven seasons for the Saints, amassing 5,362 yards and 44 touchdowns. Ingram is still allowed to participate in all offseason and preseason practices and games.

Ingram was slated to earn $4 million in base salary in 2018, and the suspension will cost him $1 million in pay. He had 9 rushes for 48 yards, which 41 of those yards came on his lone touchdown run of the year. Alvin Kamara never had more than 12 carries in any game last year; using him as a workhorse for the first 25 percent of the season could make it harder to keep Kamara fresh later in the year. He also caught 58 passes for 416 yards.
