As the official event expired at 2 p.m., officers at the Gloucester Township Police Headquarters looked over the day's haul: two thigh-high boxes full of unwanted medicine.

Erie County Executive Kathy Dahlkemper, who has been part of a national task force on opioids, said this helps to keep the drugs out of the wrong hands.

He wanted to get rid of them, but said the pharmacy would not take the drugs.

The Drug Enforcement Agency spearheads this event each year and hopes their efforts will help in the fight against prescription drug abuse.

Drug take-back programs are not particularly new, but they are becoming more common. She is a former nurse and said she knows how risky it can be if prescription drugs are disposed of properly.

Last October, 912,305 pounds of pills were collected nationwide.

According to the 2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 6.4 million Americans abused controlled prescription drugs.

To safely dispose of liquid medication, Charleston Police Sgt. Trevor Shelor says you should put pour the liquid into a Ziplock bag filled with old coffee grounds or cat litter, seal and place in the garbage.
