During his 43rd edition of the monthly programme 'Mann Ki Baat, ' the Prime Minister said that Baba Saheb worked to strengthen the oppressed, exploited, deprived standing on the brink of marginalisation via the Constitution of India.

"I seek benediction from Lord Buddha for the entire world so that we can fulfill our responsibility in building a peaceful and compassionate world based on his teachings", he said.

Lord Buddha's messages are as relevant today as 25 centuries ago when they were first uttered. He added that India and Buddhism do not discriminate against anyone based on race, caste or creed.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has urged all not to disseminate wrong messages about Lord Buddha.

His government was working with compassion to serve the people, in line with these teachings, he said.

Modi said 18 states had sites related to the Buddha and it was essential to develop these places for pilgrims and others.

The Prime Minister said that Lord Buddha's compassion has endeared him to millions.

It is also celebrated in South and Southeast Asia as Vesak which also acknowledges the enlightenment and death of the Buddha.

He offered "Sangh Dana" (donation) to Buddhist monks from countries such as Japan, Sri Lanka and Vietnam who were present at the event. To mark the day, almost 40 reputed Buddhist organizations from different parts of the country and 10,000 Buddhist monks, followers and nuns are expected to assemble in Delhi to celebrate Buddha Purnima.

He also presented the Vaishakh Sammaan Prashasti Patra to the Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies, Sarnath, and the All India Bhikshu Sangha, Bodh Gaya.
