Syria, Russia and Iran condemn tripartite attack on Damascus

The prospect of Western military action in Syria that could lead to confrontation with Russian Federation hung over West Asia on Friday but there was no clear sign a US-led attack was imminent.

Russian Federation is likely to call for a meeting of the United Nations Security Council to discuss US, British and French air strikes on Syria, one of its lawmakers says.

On Thursday, Trump held a meeting with his national security team, but White House officials say no final decisions have been made.

Ambassador Antonov said: "Insulting the President of Russian Federation is unacceptable and inadmissible".

"In 2013, President [Vladimir] Putin and his government promised the world that they would guarantee the elimination of Syria's chemical weapons", Trump said. "We can not take such risks", he said at a forum. Trump, ignoring Mattis' warning, pushed United States military leaders to develop a plan to attack the Syrian Government.

In the UK, Cabinet ministers said that it was "highly likely" the Assad regime was responsible for the attack.

But he also appeared anxious to avoid a wider conflict, saying France would "in no way allow an escalation".

It is noted that according to the officials of the security sector, the British government communications Centre (GCHQ, the intelligence Agency responsible for protecting the public value and electronic intelligence - ed.) will "continue to expose the unacceptable behaviour of Russian Federation in cyberspace". Around 30 missiles were fired in the attack, and a third of them were shot down, the official said.

Russia's foreign ministry said Syria had been attacked just as it had a chance for peace.

Meanwhile, the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) says experts are travelling to Syria and will start investigations on Saturday.

The Russian leader warned against "ill-considered and risky actions ... that would have consequences beyond conjecture".

Russia's UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said the meeting confirmed that the U.S. and its allies "continue to put global politics and diplomacy in the realm of myth-making - myths invented in London, Paris, and Washington".

However, Iran - another key ally of the Assad government - condemned the strikes.

On the ground in Syria, rebels in Eastern Ghouta surrendered their heavy weapons and their leader left the enclave, signalling the end of one of the bloodiest assaults of the seven-year war and a major win for the Assad regime. "We thank them both", Trump added.

A Russian-drafted resolution won three votes at the Security Council, far below the nine votes required for adoption.
