Sirisena suspends parliament till May 8

Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena on Thursday suspended parliament for almost a month, an unexpected move that comes as a power struggle deepens between him and his unity government's prime minister.

They reluctantly resigned after Wickremesinghe's United National Party (UNP) submitted a motion of no-confidence in them.

The premier comfortably defeated the move to oust him, but angry UNP backbenches were out for blood seeking to expel the six SLFP ministers for voting against Wickremesinghe.

The cabinet ministers who resigned were the Sports Minister, Dayasiri Jayasekara; Minister of Social Empowerment and Welfare, S.B. Dissanayake and Disaster Management Minister, Anura Yapa.

Those who voted against Wickremesinghe "have no moral right to remain in government", Petroleum Minister Arjuna Ranatunga said.

"We will now act as SLFP members, we will not be joining the JO".

Four new Ministers were appointed today temporarily to fill the portfolios left vacant by the resignation of six Sri Lanka Freedom party (SLFP) ministers yesterday.

Relations between the rival groups in the unity government soured after both suffered losses in February's local council elections. Their resignation has prompted a Cabinet reshuffle, which political sources said would now be postponed to at least until May 8.

The SLFP will formally decide next week if it should leave the unity government, the party sources said. Later, Sirisena himself is reported to have supported the NCM against Wickremesinghe.

Sirisena in 2015 quit the then Rajapaksa government to join hands with Wickremesinghe, the then main opposition leader, to defeat Rajapaksa in the presidential election ending his 10-year rule.
