Rampage Stomps To The Top Of The US Box Office

Rampage Stomps To The Top Of The US Box Office

There's no question that The Rock is the biggest action star in the world, but he proved this weekend with Warner Bros.'s "Rampage", an adaptation of the popular 1980s video game, that if his name is on the project people are going to run to the theater to see it - a lot of people.

Dwayne Johnson's arcade game-inspired Rampage crept past last week's top film A Quiet Place to take the No. 1 spot on the box-office charts, but just barely. Heading into the weekend, tracking showed Rampage launching to $35 million-$40 million. The New Line and Warner Bros. film, which reportedly cost about $120 million to make, is off to a solid start overseas, where it will gross an estimated $114.1 million this weekend.

"George the giant gorilla is not happy in Rampage".

Rampage will need to demonstrate staying power, like Johnson's recent hit Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, and/or do big business internationally to be considered a success. It beats out last weekend's No. 1, the horror film A Quiet Place, which was pushed down to second position. Other big markets include Mexico ($4.8 million from 2,831 screens), Malaysia ($3.5 million from 590 screens), Indonesia ($3.1 million from 687 screens), and Russian Federation ($3.1 million from 2,668 screens). Set to earn $32.6 million in its second weekend (cume now $99.6 million), "A Quiet Place" will take second place.

Tigers rained out again; doubleheader vs. Yankees set for Sunday
The Tigers planned to send left-hander Francisco Liriano (1-1) to the mound against NY right-hander Luis Severino (2-1). The Tigers initially canceled just Game 1; at about 1 p.m., they made the sensible decision to scratch Game 2, as well.

Third place went to the low-budget Blumhouse horror movie Truth or Dare, which brought in an estimated $19.1 million in its first three days in theaters after opening on Friday the 13th. Audiences gave it a B-minus CinemaScore.

Rounding out the rest of the top five: Steven Spielberg's virtual-reality film Ready Player One, starring Tye Sheridan and Olivia Cooke, with $11.2 million in its third week, and John Cena's bawdy prom comedy Blockers, with $10.3 million in its second week.

Fox Searchlight also expanded Wes Anderson's stop-motion movie Isle of Dogs to 1,939 theaters (up from 554), collecting an estimated $5 million (good for seventh place) and upping its domestic total to about $18.5 million. Check out the April 13-15 figures below.
