'Much-awaited cabinet reshuffle today'

Jammu: The People's Democratic Party and the Bharatiya Janata Party coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir will undertake a major reshuffle of the state cabinet, including induction of some new ministers, on April 30, Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh said.

Singh said, "I have resigned as the Deputy Chief Minsiter of the government".

Seen as a desperate bid to have an image makeover in the wake of growing mistrust in its core constituency of the Jammu region, BJP has pushed five new faces for inclusion in ministry in the eagerly awaited rejig taking place today. A senior BJP leader said he was with BJP president Amit Shah who would hand it over to Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh who was in Delhi.

He claimed that an aircraft carrying a Special Protection Group (SPG) protectee developing such a snag was unprecedented. On corruption, it said steps would be taken to improve delivery of services and establish a civic rights club.

The names of those likely to be inducted into the cabinet are likely to be forwarded to Governor N N Vohra after the arrival of BJP's National General Secretary Ram Madhav in Jammu tomorrow morning. Facing massive outrage, the two ministers were forced to eventually step down from their posts.

J&K Governor N N Vohra will administer the oath of office and secrecy to those being inducted into the council of ministers at the convention centre at 12 noon on Monday, an invitation for the ceremony read.

There is high possibility that one or two ministers of state (MoS) could be elevated to the Cabinet rank, keeping in view their good performance, sources said.

The reshuffle is likely to be confined to the BJP as Mehbooba has not given her mind whether she will carry out the exercise among the ministers of her PDP. PDP has 14 portfolios even after it sacked finance minister Haseeb Drabu in March. Two Cabinet Ministers Lal Singh and Chander Prakash Ganga had earlier submitted their resignations after pressure was mounted on them because of their presence in the protest rally organised in support of accused in the rape case.
