John Oliver Bought Russell Crowe's Jockstrap for Alaska's Last Blockbuster Video

John Oliver Bought Russell Crowe's Jockstrap for Alaska's Last Blockbuster Video

He did this as a prelude to an offer he hopes Blockbuster management can't refuse - Russel Crowe's jockstrap from the movie Cindarella Man, free of charge.

Oliver told his audience that he had bought the jockstrap - as well as a vest Crowe wore in Les Miserables and a seat from American Gangster - to donate to the last Blockbuster outlet in Anchorage, Alaska.

Fast forward several weeks to the date of the auction, where someone reportedly purchased that jockstrap for $7,000.

The only part of the news that was more entertaining was that Oliver said he was going to send the piece of movie history, along with a few other items of Crowe's from assorted films, to the last remaining Blockbuster Video in Alaska.

"We seem to be rapidly losing something I didn't even know we had", Oliver quipped. "I'm sorry it wasn't us, we didn't buy it..." before he immediately added: "We did, we absolutely did!" On Last Week Tonight, John Oliver confirmed rumors that his show purchased props from Crowe's "The Art of Divorce" auction, where the actor (along with Sotheby's) put a lot of random memorabilia, guitars, and Australian art work Crowe collected over his nine-year marriage up for sale.

In addition to the jockstrap from Cinderella Man, the show also bought a robe and shorts from the same film. "Just call us in the next 48 hours and we will send it to you!" The store is scheduled to open at 10 a.m. Monday.
