JD Wetherspoon quits social media following "trolling" of MPs

JD Wetherspoon quits social media following

The group is not doing so because it could hardly be bothered to update its Facebook, Instagram and Twitter accounts but because of concerns over abuse of social media channels.

According to an official statement from the pub operator, the move comes after "the bad publicity surrounding social media" including "the trolling of MPs" as well as the recent news surrounding "the misuse of personal data".

The company has nearly 900 pubs in the United Kingdom and Ireland, many of which have individual social media accounts associated with them.

JD Wetherspoon has closed all of its social media channels, with the United Kingdom on-premise operator claiming that services such as Twitter and Facebook have become too addictive.

Booze giants J.D. Wetherspoon have made a decision to shut down down their Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages for all 904 of their pubs and their head office.

Their reward will be a return to Hampden, for the Scottish Cup final against Motherwell in late May. It was just unacceptable for Rangers'.

"While all the accounts were relatively active, it's obvious from a quick look through them that they didn't form a key part of the company's strategy before they shut down", says the paper.

Tim Martin, Wetherspoon chairman, said: 'We are going against conventional wisdom that these platforms are a vital component of a successful business.

It also said it was encouraging customers to "get in touch with us via our website or by speaking with the manager at their local pub". He, and the company's pub managers, do not believe that closing the accounts will have any affect on the business "whatsoever", he said.

JDW has more than 44,000 followers on Twitter, as well as 102,902 Facebook "likes" and 98,160 Facebook followers, all of who will have to find out about their favourite Wetherspoon pubs through their websites and the pubco's magazine.
