IRFU confirm Paddy Jackson and Stuart Olding's contracts have been revoked

IRFU confirm Paddy Jackson and Stuart Olding's contracts have been revoked

It is widely expected the IRFU will announce the players' departure today following an internal review which was completed on Wednesday.

Paddy Jackson and Stuart Olding will not be returning to play for Ulster or Ireland following reviews by the province and IRFU in the wake of their recent trial and acquittal of rape charge.

It follows an internal review which was called after the pair were acquitted of the rape of a 19 year old girl last month.

Separately, Ulster Rugby say that Craig Gilroy has been suspended until 26 April.

In a statement, the IRFU have said they'll conduct an in-depth review of current structures and educational programmes within the game in Ireland. Jackson was also cleared of sexual assault.

"However, I recognise that my behaviour has fallen far short of the values expected of me as an global player, a role model for the game of rugby and as a son and a brother", he added.

Two other men, Blane McIlroy, 26, and Rory Harrison, 25, were acquitted of lesser charges connected to the case. The province undertook a review to a text message from the Ireland player, which was read out during the trial.

The messages, which referred to women in derogatory terms, were presented as evidence during the marathon nine-week trial at Belfast Crown Court.

He "apologised unreservedly" for any offence caused.

He had already been made unavailable for selection and will now face a further two-week suspension.

The incident has sparked protests outside the club grounds, and several club sponsors have expressed concern following the case.

Official shirt sponsor Bank of Ireland has said it is "highly concerned" about the "serious behaviour and conduct issues".

The protest was organised by the Belfast Feminist Network and was attended by representatives from a number of women's groups around the country.

"It's not about the verdict in this trial, it's about what has been revealed about certain players attitudes towards women that have been described as offensive, but for me it's not offensive, it's risky and harmful".

Barristers acting for Mr Jackson and Mr Olding also complained about the judge's tone and delivery in her legal direction to the jury on day 40 of the trial.

Thousands of people on both sides of the argument have also signed competing online petitions reflecting their views.
