Five accused in Mecca Masjid bomb blast case acquitted

A special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in Hyderabad on Monday pronounced its verdict in the sensational Mecca Masjid attack which was allegedly carried out by a group of right-wing terrorists 11 years ago on May 18, 2007. They will be presented in Nampally Criminal Court on 16th April under tight security.

The blast at the historic Mecca Masjid on May 18, 2007 during Friday prayers had killed 9 and left 58 others injured.

Soon after the blast a special investigation team (SIT) was constituted by the then Hyderabad police commissioner Balwinder Singh.

The Accused, numbering ten, allegedly belonged to the right-wing organizations. The accused arrested were - Devendra Gupta, Lokesh Sharma, Swami Aseemanand, Bharat Mohanlal Rateshwar and Rajendra Chowdhary.

Investigation is continuing against two other accused. The other main accused of the case, Ramchander Kalsangar and Sandeep Dange are still absconding.

To get testimony, a total of 226 witnesses were examined during the trial, and a total 411 documents were exhibited.

Swami Aseemanand and Bharat Mohanlal Rateshwar were on bail while three others have been lodged in the Central prison here under judicial remand.

Main accused of the bomb blast case Devender Gupta, Lokesh Sharma and Rajinder Chowdary who were also convicted in Dargah Ajmer Shareef Bomb Blast case were given a life sentence. Earlier, CBI was entrusted with the responsibility of investigating the case, later, the case was transferred to NIA.
