Fire destroys Delhi's only Rohingya camp, no casualties reported

A massive fire breaks out in Rohingya refugee camp near Delhi's Kalindi Kunj metro station colony on April 15 at around 3 am. "We have also lost all our articles including refugee cards and money as the fire spread very quickly". Though no causalty was reported, one person sustained burn injuries on his hand.

"It will be very hard for these people now as all they had, has been gutted in the fire", she added. "They took three hours to douse the flames".

An NGO had set up the Rohingya camp in Delhi's Kalindi Kunj locality in 2012 on a 150-odd sqm plot it owns.

The rescued refugees were provided temporary tent and mosquito nets to their spend time in the ground till their shanties are reconstructed.

According to the police, all the homes in the camp were made of asbestos sheets; all of them were gutted.

Fillenwarth says four people suffered minor injuries and were taken to a hospital, where they will be questioned by police. Officers will also be interviewing those involved in the fight, including the four people who received minor injuries.

Mohammad Shakir, one of the residents of the camp said that about 230 people from the Rohingya community were staying in the camp. "We are being provided food and clothes by the locals, a lot of help was provided by police".

"A case under appropriate sections has been registered to further investigate the incident".

A forensic team and officials from power distribution company BSES visited the burned camp to ascertain the cause of the fire as media reports claimed that the fire was caused by a short-circuit in the electrical wiring of a makeshift toilet.
