"Unless the source of the product is known, consumers anywhere in the United States who have any store-bought romaine lettuce at home should note eat it and should throw it away, even if some of it was eaten and no one has gotten sick", the CDC advises.

The CDC had originally traced the outbreak - which has sickened at least 53 people across 16 states - specifically to chopped romaine lettuce grown in the Yuma, Ariz., region.

No romaine lettuce, in any form, grown in the Yuma, Arizona, area is completely safe from E. coli, federal officials warn as the disease outbreak grows to affect more than 50 people nationwide. Romaine lettuce for sale in California.

Restaurants and retailers should not serve or sell any romaine lettuce from the Yuma, Arizona growing region.

The FDA recommends that consumers ask grocers, restaurants, and other food service establishments where their romaine lettuce originated, and avoid any romaine lettuce, whether chopped, whole head or hearts, that originated from Yuma.

The FDA is continuing to investigate this outbreak and will share more information as it becomes available. Infections start when someone swallows a tiny amount of human or animal feces through a variety of ways, including contaminated food, consumption of unpasteurized (raw) milk, unclean water or contact with the feces of infected people. Symptoms of infection include bad stomach cramps, diarrhea (often bloody) and vomiting. Of the hospitalizations, five patients developed a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome. The CDC says people in the previous outbreak were infected with a different DNA fingerprint of E. coli O157:H7 bacteria.
