SIPRI: Conflicts fuel weapon deliveries to Middle East, Asia

"Yet the U.S. and European states remain the main arms exporters to the region and supplied over 98 percent of weapons imported by Saudi Arabia". Earlier this year, the German government said it would stop approving arms exports to anyone participating in the war in Yemen.

The research group said Russian Federation exported weapons to 47 countries as well as to rebel forces in eastern Ukraine, where Moscow-backed separatists are fighting the central government in Kyiv.

China is the fifth biggest arms supplier in the world and also supplies the most weapons to India's neighbours, a study by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute has shown.

According to the study, which monitors arms deliveries by volume every five years to iron out short-term fluctuations, Saudi Arabia is the world's second-largest importer of arms after India, and the United States accounts for 61 percent of arms imports to Saudi Arabia, and Britain for 23 percent.

"This development is part of the growing strategic partnership between the two countries under which the US has begun to supply India with advanced military equipment", the report said.

The Middle East received nearly half of the us arms exports from 2013 to 2017, it said.

India was the world's largest importer of major arms in the 2013-2017 period, accounting for 12 percent of the global total, said SIPRI, adding that India's imports increased by 24 percent between 2008 and 2017.

With the Middle East accounting for 49 percent of total USA arms exports, Saudi Arabia was by far its biggest customer.

Setting a new trend, China has emerged as the number one arms supplier to Pakistan, Bangladesh and Myanmar, by supplying almost 70% of the arms used by the military in these three nations.

India remained the world's largest arms importer between 2013 and 2017, accounting for almost 12% of the global imports whereas its arch-rival Pakistan's military purchase dropped by 36% in the same period.

Pakistan's arms imports fell by 36% from 2008-'12 to 2013-'17. While Pakistan was the main recipient of China's arms exports in 2013-17, there were large increases in Chinese arms exports to Algeria and Bangladesh in that period.

The Middle East, a region where in the past five years most countries have been involved in conflict, accounted for 32% of global imports of weapons. The United States and Israel were in second and third place.
