Sanders, Lee and Murphy Try to Pull US Out of Yemen War

United States lawmakers have submitted a draft resolution calling for an end to U.S. military support for the Saudi-led coalition against Houthis in Yemen.

"We believe that, as Congress has not declared war or authorised military force in this conflict, the U.S. involvement in Yemen is unconstitutional and unauthorised, and USA military support of the Saudi coalition must end", said Sanders, who is an independent, but ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016.

The U.S. has supported the campaign for nearly three years, providing targeting intelligence, weapons, and mid-air refueling support for Saudi warplanes.

Murphy of CT, and independent Bernie Sanders of Vermont will attempt to use a provision in the 1973 War Powers Act, Reuters reported.

Rand Paul previous year to try to prevent arms sales to Saudi Arabia for its war in Yemen.

At the end of his presidency, Obama approved a raid on an al-Qaida compound in Yemen's Al Bayda province.

In response, the USA has provided support for the Saudi campaign. But it didn't take place until the first month into Trump's administration.

"Every strike advances the defeat of violent extremist organizations, and protects the United States and partner nations from attack at home and overseas", Army Lt. Col. Earl Brown, a U.S. Central Command spokesman, said in a statement last month. A Lee aide told The Intercept that the procedure was unprecedented, and it's unclear what type of resistance the process will face from Senate leadership.

Yet legally, Congress is supposed to have the war-making powers, and this Senate effort stands to be the first time in recent history that Congress looks like they might be reasserting that authority.

Lawmakers have argued for years that Congress has ceded too much authority over the military to the White House. USA officials have declined to say precisely how many US forces are on the ground in Yemen, citing security concerns. The conflict has functioned as something of a proxy war, with Iran backing the Yemeni side against the US -backed Saudis. "That law guarantees a vote on the Senate floor within days".

The Senate proposal was met with approval on Twitter.

However, none of those efforts have resulted in a direct vote on the war powers.

As a result of the Saudi-led war, a child younger than the age of five in Yemen dies of preventable causes every 10 minutes, the senators said in arguing for the resolution.

The discussions were held the same day congressional leaders secured a non-binding compromise resolution that no longer invoked the War Powers Act, but instead offered a resolution declaring the war in Yemen outside the scope of the fight against Al Qaeda.

"Thousands and thousands of innocent civilians inside Yemen today are dying, and the United States is complicit", Murphy said. "Saudi Arabia is deliberately using starvation as a weapon of war in Yemen, putting 8 million people a step away from famine". Howard "Buck" McKeon, a former senior GOP representative who retired from Congress to open his own lobbying shop, the McKeon Group, is also paid by the Saudi government to help maintain political support for the war in Yemen.
