Probation in Body Fluids Case at Hartford

Probation in Body Fluids Case at Hartford

A state judge in Hartford on Monday granted 18-year-old Brianna Brochu's request for accelerated rehabilitation. The program could result in misdemeanor charges being erased from her record. Many said this was a hate crime, but the convicted student - while admitting to rude behavior - said race was not her motivation.

Brochu, 18, was arrested in October for misdemeanor criminal mischief and breach of the peace after being expelled from The University of Hartford in CT over her abusive treatment of her roommate, whom she dubbed a 'Jamaican Barbie'. The harshest hate crimes in CT carry a maximum sentence of 10 years imprisonment.

Brochu's lawyer, Thomas Stevens, apologized on her behalf and said Brochu had wanted to apologize and express her regret sooner but that he directed her not to out of concern over possible civil litigation. The former roommate, who is white, put blood from a tampon on her then black roommate's backpack and boasted on social media of putting her toothbrush "where the sun doesn't shine".

Brianna Brochu appeared at the Superior Court in Monday for her hearing. He said Brochu has lost her scholarship to attend the University of Hartford and a job she held at the time. She said she lied in the Instagram post in an attempt to "appear amusing", a police report said.

'She lives in CT and she would go home every weekend.

Brochu was expelled from the university after being arrested. Investigators found none, she said.

Delhi: Man posing as Uber driver locks woman inside cab, harasses her
He used to drive the vehicle even though he was not registered as the driver of the vehicle and did not have a driving licence. The driver, who had not even driving license, was driving someone else's auto who was registered with the aggregator Uber.

"With the consequences she has endured ... death threats ... she knows she made a mistake", Stevens said.

'I'm spending my own money that my parents give me for food and groceries, the health center on campus is not free - in fact they're expensive, ' she complained. Both women had asked school officials for a change in roommates.

'There was a tipping point that caused my clients to do whatever she did and it was when Ms. Rowe took some unflattering videotape of her and posted it'.

Judge Omar Williams also thinks the public shame Brochu will experience is punishment in itself; stating that friends, potential employers and even romantic interests will all be able to find out about Brochu's conduct with a simple internet search.

"The internet has a long memory and you will have to do a lot of good to live down these allegations", he said.

Outside the courthouse, state NAACP President Scot X. Esdaile reiterated that Brochu should have been charged with a hate crime and basically stated what most of us are thinking about this lame slap on the wrist she received. "That's what we face every day".
