GM may launch an Airbnb for cars later this year

The car-sharing service project could mark another step forward in GM's transition from auto manufacturer to mobility provider.

General Motors reportedly plans to test a new car-sharing program that would allow owners of the company's vehicles to rent them out.

GM's Maven division already provides vehicles to interested users in select areas, but those cars are wholly owned by GM and can only be borrowed in 28-day increments.

The pilot-which GM will try to grow into a full-fledged business if it's successful-could mark another step forward in GM's transition from manufacturer to mobility provider.

GM is said to be preparing its pilot program for this summer, suggesting it will be a traditional car-sharing service rather than relying on self-driving operation.

This program would only be open to GM owners, and GM would take a slice of the revenue.

Maven already rents vehicles to individual drivers, including customers looking for short-term wheels, as they have through services such as Zipcar. It also offers rentals for drivers who work for ride-hailing services such as Lyft. There are other startups like Turo and Getaround that exist in this area, there are now no existing companies that have the resources or reach like GM does. By launching a peer-to-peer service, Maven would get access to more vehicles without its parent having to carry more hard assets on its balance sheet. Toyota is one of the companies that have backed Getaround, a similar startup.

Tesla has envisioned a peer-to-peer service that allows owners to make money from their vehicle while it would otherwise be wasting time in the garage or in a parking lot.
