Giphy stickers suspended from Snapchat and Instagram

Giphy stickers suspended from Snapchat and Instagram

TechCrunch also reports Snapchat saying, "As soon as we were made aware, we removed the GIF and have disabled Giphy until we can be sure that this won't happen again. while we wait for Giphy's team to take a look at it". Both multimedia social networks have (temporarily) removed their GIF features altogether.

If you're a regular GIF user on Snapchat and Instagram and wondering what changed over the weekend due to which you can not add those funky moving images to your Stories, here's the complete story.

Snapchat only launched the Giphy integration on February 20th so people could jazz up their photos and videos with moving images curated as safe by the Giphy team.

Under the name of "Nigger Crime Death Counter" a monkey is cracking the death counter while a white man is prompting the "bonzo" to keep an eye on the numbers.

The GIF includes disturbing text including a racial slur, which TechCrunch has blurred out below. Giphy apologized for the incident as well for allowing the racist gif to appear in its database. This type of content has no place on Instagram. It's certainly not the kind of GIF that Instagram and Snapchat would have wanted their users to see in the library which is why both have now yanked Giphy integration from their apps.

Shoes hurled at Nawaz Sharif in Lahore seminary
According to a private news channel, the minister had to leave his speech incomplete and came down from the stage. After the incidence, Khawaja Asif said that he should be released saying he has no enmity with him.

"We are very sorry". This step has been taken after the users experienced extremely racist GIF there. Giphy also issued a statement on the issue saying, the offensive GIF was removed instantly given it violates the platform's "content guidelines". Here's a full statement Giphy spokesperson told TechCrunch.

Giphy has since removed the offensive GIF and said in a statement that it was available in its library due to "a bug in our content moderation filters "specifically affecting GIF stickers". Giphy has claimed to have fixed the bug and also re-moderated all of the GIFs in their vast library. Also, the service said that they are reviewing every other GIFs manually and the process should be "finished shortly".

"We take full responsibility for these recent events and sincerely apologise to anyone who was offended", they added. Instagram launched similar integration a week later.

This incident is tremendously embarrassing for not only Snapchat and Instagram, but also Facebook, the parent company of Instagram.
