The 74-year-old politician and former radio broadcaster fell out of the auto on St Kilda Rd, knocked unconscious and taken to The Alfred Hospital for checks, the Herald Sun reported.

Senator Hinch, 74, said he spent Monday night at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne after being diagnosed with what he called "slight brain trauma" from the tumble on St Kilda Road.

Mr Hinch, 74, fell out of a auto in Melbourne after drinking two glasses of wine at dinner on a night out on Monday night, the Herald Sun reported.

The 74-year-old was stepping out of the auto on Monday night when he tripped and knocked himself unconscious, the Herald Sun reports.

"I have a couple glasses of wine a couple of times a week, I water it down", he said outside his Melbourne home on Thursday.

"If I feel like having a glass of wine, yes I will".

He said he felt embarrassed, but fine. "[But] I thought, 'You've got to live your life.' Until I'm lying on the slab for the last time, I'm here to live my life the best I can".

In 2008, Mr Hinch said: "I don't drink now, never will again".

"Yes, I will continue to drink".
